The one thing consistent about the NDA Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is that they never fail to surprise you. The recent Cabinet reshuffle and resignations of certain ministers raised several eyebrows. Let us study them one by one starting with Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan’s tryst as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare in 2014 started off to a bumpy ride. The BJP was yet to consolidate its new position as the single largest party and preferred to go with a few renowned names in the first Government (2014 – 2019). However, it was soon clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not particularly satisfied with his performance and dedication to improve the health structure of the country. But, as there was no other choice available at that time, the NDA pursued with him.
Come 2019, Dr. Harsh Vardhan proved his mettle and won again from Chandni Chowk and once again, owing to lack of options, was appointed as Minister of Health and Family Welfare. Then, came the tsunami called the Chinese Virus that swept the nation. Thanks to an incredible effort by PMO and HMO and the enforced 40-day national lockdown, the first wave was seen off without much discomfort and difficulty.
The second wave however was very poorly handled by Dr. Harsh Vardhan. Though there were repeated warnings from the PMO and HMO to write to state governments asking them to be prepared for the second wave with sufficient life-saving medicines and oxygen, Dr. Harsh Vardhan paid no heed to the red flags raised by both PM and HM. PM was constantly reassured that everything was under control and certain progress reports were shown to him which suggested the same.
The ground reality was however starkly different. The suspicions of both PM and HM were raised when the cases started to build by the end of February and beginning of March. Consecutive meetings with Dr. Harsh Vardhan resulted in the latter giving a rosy picture of arrangements in the states. Unfortunately, all these arrangements were only on paper with most of them not materializing owing to several CM’s (Kejriwal, Baghel, Gehlot, Mamata Banerjee and Soren) inefficiency, laziness and lackadaisical attitude.
The PMO and HMO were in for a rude shock when cases rose sharply during the hotly contested WB elections. There is sufficient evidence to state that Congress along with Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal had used their illegals to instigate the second wave that stormed the nation. The Rohingyas, Bangladeshis and Uighur Muslims who are living in Bengal, Delhi, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh on the invitation of these aforementioned people and party yet again proved their worth to them by becoming super spreaders.
By May first week, both PM and HM abandoned all campaigning that had already been criticized by the opposition parties and sat down with Dr. Harsh Vardhan to understand the true picture. The picture painted by Dr. Harsh Vardhan and reports coming in from various quarters on the ground were diametrically opposite.
PMO and HMO swung into action working 24 x 7 along with the Railways, Aviation and Indian Air Force to ensure that enough supplies, oxygen and medicines were delivered to every part of the country. Dr. Harsh Vardhan was relegated to the corner for his lack of initiative, efficiency and deliverance value in the time of crisis – a crisis created singularly by his penchant for spending all his time on Twitter and wishing happy birthday.
Once, the terrible second wave passed, it became clear that Dr. Harsh Vardhan who had never worked well with PM Modi would be given the boot. And true to form, PM Modi chucked him out and appointed the extremely talented and competent Mansukh Mandaviya in his place. Mansukh Mandaviya is known to be a slave driver, focused, meticulous, goal-oriented and capable of handling matters with a cool head.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan’s close proximity to the Indian Medical Association which is itself a highly controversial voluntary organization known for its proclivity to function as a Christian Missionary under the leadership of Dr. John Rose Austin Jayalal has not gone down well with people. He has time and time again disparaged Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani and Siddha medicine. His work on the ground to improve the health structure after being in charge of the Ministry for seven years leaves a lot to be desired. His tendency to spend too much on the virtual platforms and social media has lost him his job, respect and credibility.
In the process, Dr. Harsh Vardhan has also lost the coveted position of Minister of Earth Sciences. Dr. Harsh Vardhan is officially in the cold and likely to remain there for many months to come.
In conclusion, PM Modi expects absolute commitment, dedication to the job on hand and targets achieved well before its time. Only those who are willing to sacrifice all their time to the nation and its people will henceforth be given a place in his team.
